Receipt photos to an expense CSV

A shoebox of receipts needs to become a spreadsheet for bookkeeping.

In short: Receipt photos to an expense CSV is a beginner finance recipe that uses ChatGPT, Claude. Estimated cost: ~$0.01–0.03 per receipt (vision). Status: tested on 2026-10-14.

I'm uploading receipt photos. For each, output one CSV row:
date (YYYY-MM-DD),merchant,category,subtotal,tax,tip,total,payment_last4,confidence(high/med/low)
Categories: {CATEGORY_LIST}.
If a field isn't on the receipt (e.g. no tip) or is unreadable, leave it blank; if unreadable and set confidence=low. Don't guess totals.
Output only the CSV with a header row, then a list of rows marked low confidence.

Setup steps

  1. Photograph receipts flat and well lit.
  2. Upload in batches of 10–20.
  3. Check low-confidence rows against the photos.
